About Toelle Hovan

I am a “Renaissance Woman”. When it comes to art, I’ll try anything once. I’m always experimenting, learning and changing. My work has the feel of a scholar because of the many hours of academic study. I have attended classes in Fine Art at Augusta University, the University of South Florida, and Hillsbough Community College, Daytona State College as well as several private Schools of Art. Most of my classes at college and university were art related.
I work in acrylics &oil on paper or canvas. I also do some work on the computer.
My ‘Color Book' work started from my vacation field sketches. I made quick sketches then colored them in with watercolor paints to catch the feel of the local color. Back in my studio I tried to keep that freshness as I reproduced them in acrylics. I continued the black out lines which give them that child’s color book look.
My studio ‘Still Life’ work is from setups I make from all my “stuff” collected over the years from thrift and antique shops. I add produce and flowers sometime. My work starts with reality. I do sketches to see how it all fits on a surface, then I let it go a little ‘wankie’.
The ‘Chairs’ are about people. I try to capture the personalities of the people who own the chair. I exaggerate the foreshortening lines and open the arms to invite you to sit and get to know them.
My concept is not to reproduce reality but to respond to it. What I ‘do’ becomes more than the paint and canvas. My intention is to compel the viewer to interact with the piece on an intellectual level, evoking an emotional response.
Somehow it all sees to be more than ‘Just another painting’: IT'S ART!
