When I was a child, I loved to sketch pencil drawings and did a few charcoal drawings. I didn't share my drawings with many people, and never received any direction with my talent so I didn't pursue it past high school. Amazingly, at 47 years old, I sat down with my 6 year old daughter to paint for fun with some supplies we had given her for Christmas the previous year. It was then that I rediscovered my talent in acrylic painting. I didn't want put down the paintbrush after that day, and have been painting almost every day since then.
I thought about painting a few times in my life. I struggled with a few thoughts that kept me from pursuing it. One was that I wasn't sure I would be able to figure out when a painting was finished... when to actually stop applying the paintbrush to a painting. Isn't that funny? It is, but it was a concern I had that bothered me tremendously. In addition, I was afraid of making mistakes and with the cost of supplies, mistakes could get expensive. Well, I have overcome both of those fears through the grace of God. For example, I had an idea to paint a a tree, showing the roots and calling it 'Faith in Things Unseen'; meaning that we (and the tree) has faith in its roots. The tree was beautiful, but the roots came out hideous. Seriously hideous. So I sort of freaked and ran my paintbrush through the roots to spread the almost dry paint out. I continued to spread it and added colors, not really knowing what I was doing. I took a step back and was wow'ed by the beautiful lake water that came out of that mistake. It was gorgeous with a perfect reflections and shadows. I was thanking God for his hand in this beautiful painting, because truly I had no idea where it was going. It was like God was holding the paintbrush. It was then that I realized that my mistakes would be God's glory. From then on, every time I make a mistake, I ask God what he is going to do with it. Not once has it not turned out better than what I originally intended, and I make a lot of mistakes - thank God.
I usually don't know what I am going to paint. I just sit down with a color palette and a paintbrush and start painting. I paint the background and let it speak to me as to what to paint with it. Sometimes I'll have a concept, but usually that changes as I paint. My daughter loves to watch the paintings come to life and many times she sees things that I don't that helps me understand my painting better and sometimes leads me in a different direction with it.
I love silhouettes. It allows the viewer to put themselves into the moment and hopefully lets them imagine being the silhouette. I also love imaginary moments in paintings. Things that are not real, but have beauty. God's world is beautiful, but 'what if's' are so much fun too. For fun, I asked my daughter if the sky and tree trunks where any color she wanted, what colors would that be. She said a pink & orange sky and teal trees. So I painted what ended up to be named Hollywood Glam. When I started the painting, all I had was her imaginary world of colors in mind. The blend of those colors gave me Hollywood Glam, which I love.
I hope you enjoy my paintings. There are many more to come. Most of my originals at this time are 16 x 20 or 16 x 24. I hope to do larger sizes soon. I am also available for commissioned work. Please contact me if you have a special request.
Thank you for viewing and purchasing my paintings.
Blessings,
Vicki
