Artist Statement
My paintings manifest an internal vision in a pictorial space. Via memory and imagination I make visible a place or thing that exists only in my mind . “The sea changes constantly, I never get tired of looking at it. For me, creating art is a synthesis of my personal experience and vision against the backdrop of art history. My paintings are metaphors. If I am going to paint a seascape I will incorporate my memories of different places I have seen into an individual piece. Rather than documenting an actual place, I am more interested in reassembling the elements of scenes I remember- the way I do in scrapbooks. The subtle result I hope invite the viewer to create a personal relationship with each individual painting. Of special importance to the development of my aesthetic core are the works of Balthus, Bonnard and Diebenkorn.
Victoria Sheridan
