The small, but colorful town of Hannibal, Missouri on the banks of the great Mississippi River was the boyhood home of Samuel Clemens. He became a riverboat captain and later in life began to write some pretty great stories. He changed his name to a term used frequently on those riverboats which meant " Safe Waters ".
His memory is alive today and Hannibal, Missouri is still... Mark Twain's Town:

The medieval village of Obidos, Portugal.
Founded by the Celts in 308 BC, Obidos was conquered by the Romans in the first century and occupied by the Moors in the eighth century. The latter built the town wall, which still today is completely intact surrounding the white washed houses painted with blue or yellow bars.
