Updating Images - Yes Or No?

I have a need to update some images (upload a new image, replacing the old).

I've read a number of different posts warning about possible problems as small as losing votes to as large as having the entire gallery wiped out.

Could somebody offer some advice, review the dangers, and advise about what to do and not to do?

Thanks.

I replaced a couple the other day, Dan, with no problem. I had a hard time getting the new version of one of them to show, however. it would show in the upload window, but not in the thumbnail until I logged out and refreshed, etc.

But no issues otherwise. That said, I only replaced two images.

if you change the title the link will break. but i never had problems doing that. if you want to change the picture, edit it, and replace image, this changes the image only and doesn't effect votes and such. i've been doing this all month.

I've never had a problem changing an image. Have never changed a title though.

Theresa,

As mike said, changing titles does cause problems, but only temporarily. That is because the title of the image is used to construct the web address of the work. A title change breaks the link until the FAA database is updated, which I think is still once every 24 hours.

I am not changing titles, descriptions, or anything other than uploading a new file to overwrite the old. Still, I thought I had read where people had problems doing that.

Dan, I was uploading and changing images last night. I didn't have any problems.

In name changing or upgrading to improve your image for your FAA page, does the file name on the uploaded new image have to be exactly the same as the original? Or will votes be lost? Meaning, if the image from your computer was titled " Pretty Image 1" and on your FAA page name you just made it "Pretty Image", then you decide to later change that image to improve it. You now named it "Pretty Image 2"(in your computer). When uploading you leave the name on your FAA page still as Pretty Image" will it all work so no votes are lost? Or must the uploaded, newer image NAME(as from your computer file) and NAME on your page remain exactly the same?I hope this is not confusing.

Dan,

I just changed/updated an image, and no problems encountered. Small size of just 3.27mb, and it took just 63 sec to load.

I updated and changed a few of my older ones, as I was able to get back to a place and retake some photos, with no problems.

I only have one suggestion - as I haven't had any problems changing images a couple of times - change the name - don't use the same name - add an "a" or an "x" to it or the number "2" or something. eg: "whiteowl" becomes "whiteowlx". using the same name sometimes confuses the wizardry in the box and it doesn't see the need to move the old one out and the new one in.

Roy,

Interesting and good point. Thanks.

Just edit and replace the image. FAA takes care of the rest fine. You may have to refresh or clear your cache to see the change. Searches will update after a bit. You don't lose anything. No need to change the FAA If you do you will lose any links you have elsewhere.
Mary, the file name on your computer doesn't affect anything

Thanks Brad! I need to improve a couple or more images, but did not want to lose all and start all over.

It was said once in another discussion that if you replace a current image with a new version you will lose all the visits and votes associated with that image.

I replaced this image within the past month (as you can see the original was uploaded in 2012), and I retained all visitor counts and comments, etc...

It retained the views and votes.

I have to do the same thing, Dan. I just noticed my one image in the TV contest has a dust spot in the sky. Argh! I've printed this at almost 50" and didn't see it. Just noticed it last night. Now I'm only 19 votes away from 250 and I'm afraid to fix the image and change it out, because I certainly don't want to lose the votes now. But I don't want to leave it in the contest with a dust spot, either. Guess it would be better to check with Beth (Abbie) to make sure.

If everything remains the same except the image, we could slip some of our less popular work into the popular slots and gain an instant audience, yes? Heheheheheh...!

I noticed with my most stolen image that when there are actually links back to FAA they don't work and I did replace the image awhile back when I redid the original file with the topaz program to make it look better. I don't think I made any other changes like the title.

JC Findley

Dan, you could do that BUT then your more popular image, which is likely a good seller, might not be in front of the buyers...

It doesn't appear to make any difference what the file names are. I've updated images zillions of times with no issues.

Beth/Abbie, Brian/Sean - is anyone at FAA who they appear to be? And what's a JC?

EEK! I have only just changed one small tag on one image and (even though it wasn't many) the picture has gone from 10 Votes to 0 - Pooh Sticks! I need all the votes one can muster atm

Are they lost? Should I clear cache, or are they likely to return in 24 hours!

I SO should've read this before I changed anything! (Learns the hard way!)

the votes will looks like the vanish but they will still be there. you can verify by voting on it yourself again if you want. many counts look like zero when it's not.

the votes won't help you much though, they might have at one time, but not so much now. your much better advertising out then relying on the gimmicks.

only if you change your title - does the link break then it could be a problem. but i've changed them over and over and i have never had a problem.

Right, Thanks Mike.

I guess if I do lose them it's just another lesson to learn. Doh!

I've done it quite a few times over the past year with no problems at all. I've not lost a single image and retained all comments, votes, etc.

I've updated the old ones since they were not as great quality as the latest ones...never had a single problem...

Karen Wiles

If it can be done, I have done it...changed image, title, keywords, descriptions, and everything else in between and have never had an issue of anything going wrong from a change made...no losses of any kind as far as votes etc...if you change the title however, just remember those who commented on it might have mentioned it with the old title within your list of image comments and might cause a little confusion for a buyer possibly if they read your comments...
