I have never looked into this, but I may be interested in renaming my artistwebsites.com
Can someone point me to information on this? I looked in the Need Help - Start Here and found Sean's announcement of these sites; I read Sean's initial post. I also tried to do a search on this in the general Discussion forum, but turned up nothing.
Does it cost extra money to do this? I'm sure I will have to go to tech support eventually, but I'd like to have an idea as to what I'm doing before I do that.
If you're talking about changing the domain name of your FAA artist website - you can't. If you change your FAA user name you'll get a new AWS domain containing that name, but it will still be in the same form, with the number and the hyphens. Unfortunately, FAA doesn't manage users' domain names so the best you could do is register a domain somewhere else and have them forward it to your FAA AWS.
Nikolyn, if you're talking about having your own domain name that goes to your gallery on FAA, you can email me if you want and I'll walk you through it. I just did it myself. I bought my domain through GoDaddy...can't remember exactly but I think it cost me about $10/year.
I went with Abbie's offer but instead of NikolynMcDonaldPhotography.artistwebsites.com I got NikolynMcDonaldPhotograpphy.FineArtAmerica.com
That's fine with me, I'm just saying. I did not want to buy another domain name and lose all the links.
Now I have another question. Is there anyway to customize the artistwebsites? Like what if I don't want a bunch of those tabs showing - there's either nothing in them I don't really want what's there on this page.
The only thing you can really customize is the header. You can upload your own image for the top banner. Oh, and you can change the background color, but the choices are only black or white. And you can change some of the link/tab colors. That's about it.
However, we've been told that top-secret, mega-wonderful changes are coming soon. Who knows what they will be or when they will arrive, though.
I'm sorry, Abbie. I read that but didn't understand and still don't. Sorry to be so ignorant. I wanted the new name because I thought it was better than just nikolyn-mcdonald - just made a bunch of cards and stuff for a show this weekend using the new name. If I've goofed, I'm wondering whether you can change it back. But before I mess things up again, can you or someone else who has the time tell me the pros and cons of what I've done?
but I thought from what Abbie wrote above (Just send me the new name you wish if you wish to change it
that it would be NikolynMcDonaldPhotography.artistwebsites.com so would effectively just add the word Photograhy. Which wasn't at all necessary.
When she wrote back to say she'd changed it, she said, "This affects all our sites and please note that this will also make any links you added to other places not work now." The only place I've ever placed a link is on my FB page so I figured I could change that easily enough. I'm just not getting all this.
Then when Abbie wrote to say it was done, it said the .fineartamerica.com instead of the artistwebsites.com But I figured that was just how it was done.
The change applies to all of the various FAA URLs (.artistwebsites.com, .fineartamerica.com, .pixels.com). If you key in NikolynMcDonaldPhotography plus any of those .com bits, the links work. If you put NikolynMcDonaldPhotography.artistwebsites.com on your cards, people will get to your artist website just fine. If you used NikolynMcDonaldPhotography.fineartamerica.com on your cards, folks are going to your page here, rather than your artist website.
Thanks to everyone who is trying to help me understand. So far I am out only a little time and the cost of a little card stock and some labels. IF Abbie can change it back, I can re-do the cards. But I need to know asap so I can fix things - and before I get too far along on the "new road". So I am bumping for Abbie. But if someone else has relevant information that would help me. please feel free. Thanks.
Now I'm really confused. I checked behind the scenes and noticed that I'm
And that is what I thought it was going to be in the first place. I hadn't checked there before, so I don't know if Abbie has been waving her magic want or if she mis-spoke in the email she sent me to let me know the name change had been effected.
But this is a cut-and-paste from the email Abbie sent:
"I have changed the URL to the one you wished. http://nikolynmcdonaldphotography.fineartamerica.com You can log in as you did before. This affects all our sites and please note that this will also make any links you added to other places not work now"
So this extension (.fineartamerica) is what I put on my cards. I don't care. Really I don't. I just want people to be able to find me. And I don't want to position myself so I cannot take advantages of the new and improved artistwebsites.
