Clarification Of Views Versus Visitors To Our Profiles

On our main profile pages just below our avatars the total number of "Views" have been listed for a couple months. My running total as of a moment ago is 85,009. However, if you go to the total reported under "Visitors" in Behind the Scenes, my total is listed as 80,072. Can anyone explain how views differ from visitors and why there is a difference of some 4,937 between them? I calculated the difference between my views and visitor counts a couple days ago and the difference was only 4,760 which means the number is continually increasing.

Have you deleted any images? The total running count may include any previous images with views that are no longer in your galleries.

Yes, but not in the last 30 days, yet the differential varied in just the last two or three days.

never compared, but it's showing 2000 more on the front page. maybe the log on the inside is 24 hours off? or as jeff says, if you had images that had views, the grand total just clicks up. and the one on the visitor pages just adds the total amount of views on each image. so the lag difference might be that.

The count has been off since Sean made our views public. My total views differ by 6000.

Sorry - my new laptop is having major issues with this site.

Mine has been off since Sean made the change and began posting on the front page but the difference was much smaller several months ago. Heck, it increased by nearly 200 in just 2 or 3 days.

Mike, I would have agreed with you but the difference is equal to a month of views for me, not just 24 hours.

It jumped another 180 views since yesterday.

Could it be that a view of your profile page is where someone only looks at thumbnails and never clicks on an image while a visitor is a person or bot that opens an image file?

That sounds like the most plausible explanation, Mary Jo. My two figures are different by about 1200. I have deleted a few images, but there is no way they had even 100 views total by themselves. Anyone from admin care to enlighten us?

Mine are about 2,000 off.

I'd love to see those numbers, and the number of Followers, disappear from the profile page. I'm not comfortable having them bandied about in a public display; that's a part of my business I'd just as soon keep 'Behind the Scenes'.

Agree, Wendy.........but it's sooooo good for FAA-business - !!!!!! (I suppose)............I stopped looking at those numbers,btw.......discrepancy rules !!

Mary Jo and Valerie, I thought of deleted images as the source of the discrepancy but the difference grows every day and I haven't deleted any images for at least a couple months.

I'm with you Wendy, I don't like having view totals published for visitors to view, and I don't see how it benefits FAA.

I look at he numbers every time I come here or change accounts - but - they mean absolutely NOTHING because they don't tell you how many "real" people are visiting - and - while I understand the value of 'bots - it doesn't tell me any thing about my marketing and whether I'm reaching any person outside of FAA which I can tell, well sort of, by the # of comments.

Views should be the number of times the page is loaded and Visitors should be distinct individuals. In a perfect world.

I don't know the technical terms for it but visitors usually show up as coming from the Internet service providers hub. Like someone might show as coming from city even though they are actually in one of the suburbs.

But none of it matters as not all visits have the same value. A visit from a bot is not as valuable as a visit from someone who discovered your wonderful work from your amazing blog. Some visits have little chance of converting to a sale while others have a high chance.

I see there is still no input from admin regarding this discrepancy, which continues. Interestingly, while both numbers have grown, the difference has remained about the same...mine is 1200.

The difference between those two counts for me is less than a 100. Interesting that it's much larger for some others.

There might be a little bit of explanation in this thread earlier today asking about how an image could be sold with zero views:

http://fineartamerica.com/showmessages.php?messageid=2035881

Apparently all views aren't counted/shown in our visitor stats:

I'm quoting from Loree Johnson in the above linked thread:

"I asked about this one time and Sean (the site owner) explained that the location cannot be determined for some ip addresses. In the past, it would show a view from "unknown" when this happened, but so many people griped and complained about the "unknown" views, that he changed it so that they would not show up at all."

So perhaps some of the difference is unknown IP addresses being counted in one spot but not the other? Quite possibly there's more than one variable that's keeping the counts from matching.

Mark, you're theories are as good as any I've heard...Valerie, I doubt we will ever receive an explanation.

I for one wonder why the total views are even made public? How does showing that information to a potential client benefit the artists or FAA?

My discrepency is off by almost 34,000...no idea why~

Valerie Reeves

I agree, Lynn...it is unnecessary for the public to see View information. Really none of anyone else's business.

This thread has reminded me to add 'please remove those numbers!' to the Weekly Suggestion thread . . . again. Off to do that, right now.

Lynn Palmer

Michele, that's a huge discrepancy. Even if those are real views it doesn't help you much since you can't tell who visited or what images earned the most views.

Good idea Wendy, we should all make that suggestion.
