150 - 500 Lens

just found this in my email box - so I thought I share it here with the photographers that need a long lens and a deal - I like the sample photos

http://www.samys.com/images/newsletter/10-22-2014.html

I have the Sigma 18 - 250 and it is light and great for going on hikes without having to worry too much about all the weight while out there

I've heard good things about the Sigma 150-500. My husband and I have the Sigma 50-500, which is also a great lens, but I need to sell mine. Too heavy for me, maybe not for others (as my husband is fine with his), I am just weak in the arms. So, if anyone is interested message me.

Thanks for posting that, Nina. I have been curious about that lens. Like you, I like the Sigma 18 -250 lens for the same reasons you stated, but I have been wanting something with a bit more reach for wildlife shots. Now I have some more info to mull over...

Rumor has it Sigma is coming out with a new 150-600 lens to compete with Tamron's offering in that focal range. They must be trying to move inventory on the old ones. I've had this lens for about four years, and even though it's been in the shop twice, I've been very pleased with it for wildlife photography. However, it is not light or great for going on hikes. I wouldn't go more than a couple miles with it, and absolutely not in difficult terrain.

I have this lens and love it - great for wildlife - I do take it on long hikes and rough terrain but I have a backpack and vest type carrier and have no weight issues!

I've got the Sigma 150-500mm, and have had for a few years, and it's fabulous. Most of my bird images were taken with it ... in particular my eagles. It's probably not fabulous in low light, but I don't like to shoot in the rain .. so ...

; ))

Thanks to Lois, I have this lens, too...and, I love it! Works great for me for hummingbirds...just not in the dark! :-)

bad light with good lenses is still bad light

I love the range of this lens and the price is right

Yes, Sigma is coming out with the 150-600mm: http://www.sigmaphoto.com/product/150-600mm-f5-63-dg-os-hsm-s

I have the 150-500 and all of my birds and wildlife taken in the last year and a half are photographed with it. I love it! I just recently acquired the 18-250mm and am happy with it too.

Debbie would love to know what backpack and vest you have. I hurt my shoulder a few years back carrying around all my equipment.

Just a tad too soft and slow for me to carry that much weight. While it is mentioned that bad light is bad light, good light is rarely "sunny 16". I think the shots in the article were a waste of a D800. But then you would need a D800 to shoot at ISO 1600 and get something worth publishing or making a big print from. . I shoot about 50% of my photos with a medium to long telephoto zoom and I am in the market for my fifth one. The switch from Sigma to Nikon was a big step up for me and I still have a broken slow Sigma in the closet. That said I will take a hard look at the new 150-600.

Any lens with a very wide scope of focal lengths is a middle of the road lens. Displaying soft focus at the longer ends, in this case probably from 300 up to 500.

@Iris - the backpack I have is the Kata camera backpack - it holds whatever lens I choose to bring plus the camera

The vest (harness) is the Trekking Safari Harness Strap System - hands free, and I have a bad shoulder and neck issues so I needed something that would not stress either area and it works great - so good that one day my husband and I had left the house to go for a hike, got part way to the spot and I made him turn around in car, go back and get my harness that I had left at the front door - can't do without it, and with the weight of the 150-500 it hangs down not out so it's not in the way but if climbing I put it in the backpack

http://www.adorama.com/images/large/CZTSS.JPG - this just shows an image of the harness - hope link works

I'd want to try one of these out before buying. It may be quite difficult to use and will obviously work better with some cameras than others.
