Should I Change The Name Of My Studio?

I'm building and opening a new building this summer and expanding into a full service studio. I call myself Diane Diederich Photography at the moment and was wondering if I should change the name into something more general without my name. My name is constantly being mispronounced and misspelled, and I could also bring in other photographers to work with me in the future under a more general moniker. On the other hand…it's nice to associate my name with all of my images that are already out there. I already have a name in mind and am in the process of securing the domain name, but i'm really on the fence about it.

I'd be interested in your thoughts on this.

If you have an existing customer base, you might want to make sure whatever name you choose is recognizable to them as "you." You don't want them to assume you went out of business or something, and go find a different photography studio.

It's kind of a long thing to write, but you could include do it like this, as a transitional thing:

"APPLE BLOSSOM IMAGES: a Diane Deiderich photography studio."

After a year or two you could drop the part that says "a Diane Diderich photography studio," once you're sure that your original customers now associate "APPLE BLOSSOM IMAGES" with your work.

Good luck... that's pretty exciting, to be expanding like this!!

What Cheryl said.

BTW - I had a great English teacher in high school who was Mrs. Diederich.

I don't know if this applies to studios, but there is a vet in Orlando (I think) who sold his business when he retired. The business still bears his name and people always ask to speak to Dr. So and so. I guess it depends on the situation?

Edit: I agree with travel photo. DD has a nice ring.

I always heard that photographers names is their brand! Why would you want something " something more general without my name." If folks mispronounce or mispell it, somehow make that part of the marketing. And I don't see why you can't hire folks to work for you under Diane Diederich Photography either. I think a name change would be a bad idea. And Double D could really be associated with some other forms of photography, if you ask me. LOL

Oh, Joseph. Like a so-and-school of photography. Everyone knows instantly when you mention a name what kind of photos are produced. Makes sense.

Edit: No, I just don't see how DD would be a problem if it were written in the right font.

Craig…for some reason I associate Double D's with something other than photography :D LOL

I actually have a name that I really like already picked out but I don't want to say it until I have the domain secured.

Cheryl…good points! I like the "Blah Blah Studio" by Diane Diederich…never thought of that.

Your name is already a brand, and no matter how many you have working for you when people call they're going to ask for you.

ive been ther done that. I had a company name and changed it back to my name.

I thought DD stood for Double Diamond. A weak beer that is, thankfully, no longer brewed.

My pleasure , Diane. One thing you could do is play with your domain or email address, but not your brand.

For example I used to,have " frankjcasella " in my URL's. But people kept giving it two 'S' instead of one. Sometimes, they'd add a T or an O. So now I use 'FJCPhoto' in my URL's.

Leave it with your nane in the title. My surname gets mispronounced too, strange at it may seem, but I'd never consider removing it from my company name. If Schwarzenegger can do it, anyone can!

I'm looking at your logo already recognized by a customer base. you might consider just removing the last name and leave it Diane Photography. The association would be there as you've built it and the camera says it all. Okay, Diane could still be misspelled with 2 n's but with branding-wise you would not lose out. Pehaps the transition to costly letterheads etc. could be gradual too, as things run out unless you just want big changes and new look with the new facility. Then a poll taken among some of your customers might be useful.

With Double D you'll need a bigger sign.....

And I thought Double Diamond was supposed to work wonders. Sure was see-through beer.
