What Makes You Delete A Good Comment?

FAA created a button to delete an offensive, insult, or bad comment coming from others. But what makes you delete a good and positive comment?

What is up? Why are you asking?

i wouldn't delete a good comment. i remove:

spam
jerk remarks
trolls
there was one person who said NICE SHOT - on all my pieces - removed that.

there is no reason to remove good ones.

Many people do not want comments beneath their images, so they would delete the good, the bad and the ugly across the board.

David Bridburg

Marlene is correct. Some people feel sales wise it is distracting. People can look at my image, see the comments and go elsewhere
to another artist.

It is important to figure out what is personal in any of this and what is not. That is not always cut and dry, but
comments to and from people who do not know each other well are not particular personal.

that’s what I'm saying it makes sense if my comment was kind of spam or jerk remark but I couldn't find a good reason why my positive comments are removed.

I gave two positive complements to one of FAA member and both are removed. I don't know the man and he doesn't know me either !

Could it be my English??

Marlene Burns

I wouldn't take it personally....
Some people just like their pages 'clean.'

I will tell you exactly why. When someone visits my page they may easily see your comment and suddenly take a peek at what you have for sale. Attention span on the internet is pretty short.

Edited:
Of course that is my opinion why they do it. I keep them because I appreciate the effort and I often time will take a look and return the appreciation.

"I will tell you exactly why. When someone visits my page they may easily see your comment and suddenly take a peek at what you have for sale. Attention span on the internet is pretty short."

Not on your AW page. The links don't take you off page.

I find I mostly take comments off from group or contest admins congratulating me for having my image featured. Rarely do I get a trollish comment, but those go, too.

Janine Riley

I only delete comments when they are an obvious diversion back to the other's work.

Ex: " Nice horse, looks like the series that I have done on : Beautiful Mustangs with mane blowing in the breeze ! "

That one was made up, but I have had a few.

I don't know why people just don't turn their comments off. It does feel rather insulting to have a heartfelt comment removed.
People catch on, & just stop commenting or promoting.

Jessica Jenney

"Not on your AW page. The links don't take you off page." I wish it were the same way on FAA.

Mike Savad

many people don't like to get a comment that says - great shot. if you leave a comment (don't know what you left), leaving something with meaning might work better. but ideally i find it's a total waste of time to make a comment, let alone be signed up for all activity on that image.

I actually think "congratulations on your sale", while well intentioned, makes you look like an amateur and discourages future buyers. Maybe that's just my mis-perception.

Debbie Oppermann

I have turned comments off on my AW page but on FAA or P I do leave the comments

What looks even worse is the idiot who for a while was posting "Congratulations on your $ale". Between that and the person who decided that all the problems in our world were Martin Luther King's fault and posted it on my photo of the Loraine Motel I see little use in keeping comments around for others to see.

Floyd Snyder

No Jim, I have a tendency to think that way. But again I don't think it really matter all that much if any.

I never look at the comments. To me they are meaningless. They say the more you get the more ranking you get in the search. Considering there are thousands of artist that have been here years longer then me, sell more then me and have hundreds if not thousands more comments, I don't think it matters at all.

I try to do the positive things that matter and ignore the things that don't matter.

The AW are not as independent as everyone makes them out to be. All it takes is a scroll down and a couple of clicks and the buyer is off to figure out if they can sale their images on FAA. Same with the one where they are trying to checkout and FAA asks if they want to upload their own image or an image from instagram. From the AW it simply gives the option to checkout or keep shopping. Not sure why they can't change that on the FAA side.

Robert Kernodle

I would never delete a good comment. In fact, I make it a point to respond with ANOTHER comment, every chance I get.

When you order a product off the internet, do you read the customer reviews? If most of these are good, then does this not build your confidence in what you are considering buying? I can only see deleting comments that might undersell an image. I would never, never, never delete a comment like "awesome work", "truly remarkable stuff", "very nice", and so forth. I WANT people to see these sorts of comments. I think that people are more open to short bursts of words in their attention spans than you might think. Such words might even INCREASE their attention spans a bit further.

Sharon Cummings

I once had a buyer say he was glad to NOT see any comments on the image he bought. He wanted something unique and didn't want something that a zillion people already bought. I considered removing ALL comments, but I just do not have the extra time to devote to such a huge endeavor.

One I hate: Congratulations on your $ale.

To a potential buyer I think it looks cheap and makes it look like all you care about is making a buck. And even if that is true, it wouldn't be something you want to advertise as an artist. I delete those when I catch them.

Murray Bloom

Salman, once your comment has been read by the artist, the message has been received. It's then up to them whether to retain it. I also wonder how many people comment because they want to be seen.

I always delete "Congratulations on your sale" comments, although I've probably missed some.

Sydne Archambault

I am in Roberts camp with comments. Its like book reviews, I am more likely to buy a book with great reviews than one with none.

Georgiana Romanovna

I don't. I would like to be able to disable comments, but it's not my site so I can't, and that's ok by me. :)

Floyd Snyder

"When you order a product off the internet, do you read the customer reviews? If most of these are good, then does this not build your confidence in what you are considering buying?"

I buy almost everything on the Internet and a whole bunch from eBay. I have never checked any reviews, I have never looked at anyone's feedback and I have never been burnt one time.

I have returned things because of my own error, like ordering the wrong size or something. One time I ordered something that I just flat made an error on what I was buying. In all of these case my return or my refund was handled 100% quickly and efficiently.

This whole topic (well related topic) came up not that long ago when some one discovered that buyers could leave product reviews. I just as soon they don't do that but they are hidden fairly well on FAA so I think they are pretty much a non-starter.

Floyd Snyder

Book reviews, movie reviews and restaurant reviews ... I never pay any attention to them at all.

I am not going to let someone else's opinion sway me into what books I am going to read, or what movies I am going to see or where I am going to eat.

Oftentimes, it takes a moment to realize a seemingly positive comment is nothing more than a candy coated insult. However, I delete no one. I do have the ability to rise above the occasion.

Artists have to be modest with others and dont remove comments such good work, nice shot or other.
Also artist in my view have an open wild heart that didnt hirts or offense others by deleting their normal comments.
We create Arts, beautiful things lets not create bad feeling between members.
We dont all speak good english and sometimes really i want to say more in my comment but i cant write enough so i click L. and F. the work and i write a few word as a modest comment.
This site is for all people and the language is one of several ways to communicate between them. sometimes with just one word is enough.
Lets make FAA for all please and keep thinking that we are " artist" first and a "merchant" of art second.
At last really after i make a comment i dont come back to see what is going with my comment. but now at list i know a new thing.

Erik Ingeborgsen

I cannot help but notice that you have quite a collection of comments on your works. As I look at your works which are nice , I find that the pages look cluttered and their presence draws my attention away from the real focus your work. I find that if I am looking to purchase your work I would be distracted reading the comments and forget the work.

Erik Ingeborgsen

I also wonder if you are being maybe too sensitive about your name or who you are? This may put your opinions of others actions in the back of your mind to make you feel inadequate.

CHERYL EMERSON ADAMS

Wow. It's amazing the things people complain about.

Someone logs on, looks at a painting -- or a photo, and stays online, in your profile, long enough to say they like it, and maybe they add a few words about why they like it. What's so unspeakably awful about that, that all you want to do is delete the comments?

For the record, it makes my day when someone posts a nice comment about my work. Especially when it's a complete stranger who has no reason to comment, other than to just let me know he or she liked it.

It's great that you guys have such terrifically wonderful lives that the worst thing that can happen to your day is you receive a compliment on your artwork. Let me know when you're done with your life, and I'll trade.

I never delete good comments. Why would you do that?

I only delete bad comments, as I have my computer whiz brother trace their IP address and location.

So what the buyer is supposed to think when they see: There are no comments for ____________. Click here to be the first to comment.

Seems like they may draw a buyer to a conclusion as well. What nobody thinks this is a worthy artistic piece? Maybe if there was nothing about comments whatsover then those who prefer no comments would be better served. Otherwise, its saying: Something is supposed to go here and its not!

Sydne Archambault

For me, just me, I love my comments, and I also enjoy giving them, up to this point I had no idea some of us on FAA don't want comments. So the work around I think, for those of us who do not want comments, perhaps under your work, state, please do not comment, I keep a tidy ship here.

CHERYL EMERSON ADAMS

@See My Photos:

Would you *not* buy a piece of art that you like a lot, just because the teeming ignorant masses have not discovered the brilliance of a hidden masterpiece and commented on it?

Most people have way too much confidence in their own personal sense of good taste to get deterred by that...

Afli Sam

I welcomed all positive comments and really i thank all people writing even a few words on my works.
I have example of that and from the point of view to who they delete normal comments all these comments will be removed.

Art Prints

for this photo i received really an enough word that says many things: just: LIKE
i thing this will be removed with other artists. :)

Sell Art Online

for this work i receive a funny comment from a respected lady who i think speaks good english and she makes really good artworks: just : Nice bike

this also from the other artists it will be removed because it says nothing about the work it self. And maybe she likes the bike but not the work :)

I have many other example but i will not remove them. they belongs to other artists and this is the limit of their think and taste towards the work!

You find an artist on Fine Art America.

You click to his or her gallery.

You click on a gallery.

You click on a picture in the gallery that interests you.

The webpage that comes up displays a large image of the picture you clicked on. All the view and the details about it are up top.

If this is all you are interested in, then why are you scrolling down? What else are you looking for? If you like it, then you click on "print" or "canvas" or "metal print" or whatever other product in that image you might be interested in ordering. Why are you scrolling down ... PAST that big, screen-filling image, .. with its informative description and so forth? You must be looking for something else to engage with on the page? NOTHING else on the page, then NO further engagement. You leave the page, and maybe do not think twice about ordering.

The image page is already a clear, BIG picture of the item of interest. Why worry about what is underneath it, if it serves a purpose for people who insist on scrolling down anyway?

This does not require a degree on my part to ascertain the possibility that what I write is worth considering, out of basic reasoning alone.

I honestly like to see what others are doing and I comment on other's work a lot. For me its not a game of collecting likes and views. Comments are welcomed, validate my efforts, and It gives them and me encouragement to keep at it. As in any business, customers go with successful businesses. Try being a new imprint business on the block looking for your first sale. Customers walk in and do not want to order 500 t-shirts if you've never handled that kind of business before, have no awards, no certifications, nothing indicating experience levels. Regardless of price they are going to slowly walk backwards out of the shop. Each comment is an endorsement of your work. I never get tired of reading them and even if they stink of insincerity I will thank them and make it a point to go to their website to see what they are doing and pick the best of their work leaving a comment, to show them how its done. My mom visits my site every so often and likes to read the comments. If she can read them without being embarrassed, then I'm not going to delete it. What kind of person doesn't want a pat on the back for a job well done? Psychologically speaking, that just ain't normal. Those of you who do not want comments - duly noted.

Robert Kernodle

As for positive comments "cheapening" a work, ... this is ludicrous. How?

If you hate words, and you consider words cheap (as some visual artists apparently DO), then maybe this is how: It cheapens the work in your own mind, based on your own bias towards words or bias towards people who use words without magnificent academic credentials to give those words high permission to be used.

I do NOT regard words as cheap, and so I value them, ... ESPECIALLY when they are supportive and complimentary. It's just good energy all around your work. How is this bad, again?

And just to contrast Floyd S.'s habit of never reading customer reviews, I ALAWYS read customer reviews, and buy accordingly. I have never been "burnt" either.

Engagement from the artist I think, again only for me, is important in responding to comments. I think it is important, because the possible buyer see's the artist as thankful and interacts with comments. The artist then becomes real, for me as a buyer and I would find this very appealing.

I am sorry Salman, I can understand your concern, it would have bothered me as well.

@Cheryl- I can't say if I would or wouldn't but I have not purchased items on Amazon that had few or no reviews. I think if I saw something I liked and the comments were positive it would probably justify the purchase faster especially if the comments are from other artists. I know little about art so if another artists is saying its cool looking or perhaps even using flowery adjectives such as "the harmonious balance of the lines equally match the natural texture of this painting!" might make me feel better. lol

I am a part time cigar smoker so some of the words used to describe certain stogies make me laugh they still influence the decision. Here is an example: Very smooth but still full-bodied. I wish I could report something unique about this Cohiba, but it matches the classic, nearly perfect Cohiba profile: grassy and earthy with a little vanilla, a touch of cocoa and honey. The cigar has a long finish which coats the mouth in toast and leather. The flavor builds with each puff and the honeyed sweetness increases. Interestingly, there is also a presence of black pepper. It simply gets better with each puff. I’d give this a 5 for taste, but I reserve a perfect rating for the rare mind-blowing cigar. Consider this pretty darn close.

Jessica Jenney

Buyer reviews (Amazon etc) are different from comments from one artist to another here on FAA. Comments here don't talk about the quality of the printing and how nice it looks in their living room. They are not actually reviews.

@See My Photos:
I can't believe it. I read your post, and you almost have me convinced that I would enjoy smoking a cigar. Almost. I think I'll stick to wine though. I buy wine the way you buy cigars... the descriptions of the nose and finish help a lot. Unless the wine shop is having a wine tasting, it's not like you can just open the bottle in the store to find out if you like how it tastes/smells. Usually you have to buy it first...

The thing with art, though, is what you see is what you get. You don't have to open a bottle, or inhale the smoke, to get the full sensory experience. The whole retinal sensation is right there on your computer screen -- if I'm sensing vanilla through the computer screen... there's a problem.

@Cheryl= too funny. I don't drink alcohol but a lot of cigar bars offer select pairings of wine. A cappuccino is my beverage of choice with cigars. I usually don't light up if I don't have the time to truly savor the experience in peace.

Salman, I coach my husband on this everyday. So here goes my coaching... never and I mean NEVER allow someone being a jerk bring you down. The person who deleted your comment was an abused child. I love my fan club. I made a lot of money from my fan club, maybe not from the wallets of my fan club, but the comments made people with money contact me. So a person who deleted a compliment is...(put the appropriate noun)

I enjoy reading all the nice comments that others leave for me under my various photos. It lets me know that others who are not my family and friends enjoy my work.

Abbie Shores

The person who deleted the comment had every right to do so and if a comment is removed then going back and jeering about it and saying things like 'good luck with your deleting comments' is then harassment.

It is completely up to people whether they want a certain comment to remain on their own art. They are not spoiled, abused, ignorant or anything else. Just someone who did not want a certain comment on their work.

That is their right

FAA use to have threads here when I first joined that say. "post a picture and comment on the five or ten people above you" Then as others have said, it gets to be, "nice shot", "good picture". those are people below that didn't even look. Or the same person you find writes the nice shot thing all the time to everyone. You know who you are or were. Some are active in these threads. To some of us, we come in here to talk about art and others art related things, to others its just about marketing, saying i sold something, and nothing else.

If I get a real comment I do keep it and reply.
