I suppose the answer comes down to if you know them. And as you well know, that can be a pitfall too. If you expect something from it aside from the exposure then go with the paper. If you go on the basis of trust... don't anticipate a return or bank on it.
i'd say do it IF she were publishing, marketing and placing that book in scores of places where people would see your art and use the contact info you provide.
but this sounds like it is a personal book that she is self publishing...it's going nowhere....by her own words "if" it sells.
she isn't thinking business, but you should be.
and bill, this is NOT free advetising.....no one is going to see this book but her.
Well, from a spiritual perspective...you created your work to honor God.
If it were me, I would ask to read the book. Then ask God what He thinks.
Edit: If my spiritual work were to be used in a spiritual book...I would want to read to know if I can agree with it. You may read the book and think, nothing in this makes sense to me. OR Read it and think... God is really moving in this book...I want to be a part of this.
At least you're being offered a percentage. I've allowed my images to be published just for the exposure. I would assume if you become successful enough, you would not allow your images to be used for free but when you're unknown and struggling, it's a means of getting needed exposure.
If the author has "suggested" that you will get a percentage of profits, you can demand the right through signed documents to protect yourself.
I appreciate all the good advice. I think I will ask her for a chapter of her book, just to see if she is for real or not. I don't mind helping someone, I just don't want to do the scammers any favors.
Past experience tells me when someone pulls out the "spiritual" or Christian card, it is not for the right reason...but to lead people to believe they are wonderful, honest, giving people. It makes it easier for them to pull off the scam. Unless this person is already a published author and will sign a contract with the contributors (involving legal counsel), I would decline...
it's not free advertising if they don't buy anything. what's the percentage? then of course how big a picture does she want? if she wants full size, she's probably a scammer, she can get that chapter from any book. amazon has lots of stuff from the first chapter. i suppose small ones. but ideally i never saw a book that had captions as to who made the image.
yeah i'm a clown today. everyone is changing their avatar to something i can't recognize. i made mine different. it's a part of a series that i'll upload at some point. i figured i might as well get some other use out of it.
I am GUESSING she is not a scammer, yet it all comes down to who do you trust anymore? I don't care if people use my work even without paying for it. I have given hundreds of prints away before and will continue to do so. I have thousands of prints...nice prints just sitting there and I doubt if there is much of a future to Art sales in a few months. It doesn't keep me from wanting to create, but it does make we want to not care about the dollar.
even if she wasn't a scammer you have to trust her enough to tell you how many sold and for her to give you money for it. and that's impossible to track. that's why it's best, and i have to do this too - get money up front.
but what it comes down too. if you give all your art away then it doesn't matter if she is a scammer or not. however do keep in mind that if give the art away, it isn't worth anything to you. so why should anyone buy it? i don't give any of my art away if i can help it. people can't respect you as an artist if your just going to give it all away. i can tell you one thing though, if you give your art to this person, i can definitely say you will get other customers from it. all of them asking for free pictures for their books, auctions, etc. give one for free, and everyone wants more.
I don't think she is a scammer.Anyone can self publish a book. Most of these books are print on demond so it will not cost the writers much and some only sold a few copies. there will be more requests asking artists to use their works for free.
