I am writing this email to let my friends, family and others, know about something really wonderful that is happening with my photography work right now, and to invite you all to participate if you would like to!
I recently entered a couple of major Photography Contests.
One of those is the 'Project Imagination' contest which is being sponsored by the director Ron Howard, about 4 or 5 other movie directors, and the Canon company. Project Imagination is a national contest with 10 theme categories. The first six categories are now in their second phase....a PUBLIC voting phase.
I received a phonecall last week that one of my entries, 'THE WAY HOME,' had been selected by their judges as one of 30 finalists in the 'SETTINGS' theme category. Now my entry, and all of the other finalists in six of the theme categories, are open to you or anyone for voting. Out of the 30 finalists in each theme, 7 will be chosen as winners by you the voters, and 3 will be chosen by the judges.
You may vote ONCE a day for ONE finalist in EACH theme category (one vote per day, per category, per individual ISP number.)
You can vote every day starting today through September 24th and the more you vote the better obviously.
As many of you know, I am not crazy about the idea of 'public' voting in contests, but this is how Canon set it up. I clarified with the representative who called to notify me, that they do expect and encourage the finalists to invite friends and family (or anyone else we choose) to register on the site and vote for the photos they like, as well as posting to Facebook and elsewhere. So, feel free to forward this info to anyone you think might be interested and/or post it to your Facebook page, Twitter, etc.
Here is an excerpt from the official notification I received this morning from Canon addressing the public voting:
"Can I tell my friends and family?
· Yes! Feel free to promote voting via emails, social media and any other outreach.
· You should also remind all of your friends and family that they have a chance to submit to the 10th theme through September 24th.
Can I speak to the media?
· Immediately following the announcement, local reporters may be interested in speaking with you for interviews (this could be for digital publication, newspapers, OR television) and we can help set it up! If you are contacted directly by someone in the media looking to profile you as a finalist in Canon’s Project Imaginat10n, please reply with the following:
· For all media inquiries about Canon’s Project Imaginat10n campaign, please reach out directly to Courtney Engel at email@example.com and she will coordinate press releases, photos and interviews."
The voting just started, today September 11th. If you want to vote for my entry (or anyone else's that you like), here is what to do:
2) Once you have registered, click on 'THE GALLERY' tab at the top of the page.
3) Next, click on the 'Browse by Theme' downward arrow. A listing of the themes will open up. Click on 'SETTING.'
4) Now click on the words 'Search The Gallery' and the search icon near the upper right (light grey type) of the page.
5) A search line will open up. Type in ONLY my first name, Rory, then click on the search icon to the right of my name. (If you type in more than my first name this won't work for some reason.) All my entries will appear.
6) Now click on 'Finalists.'
7) Now, the ONLY image you will see is my finalist entry 'The Way Home' which is a snowy landscape. If you hold your cursor over the photo you will see the words in the center 'Expand to VOTE.' Click on the center of the photo.
8) After the photo opens up in the large format, move your mouse down to the bottom of the page, then click on the 'VOTE' tab...lower right near the heart symbol.
Ok, that is how you vote for my photo! If that does not work, you will have to just find my entry among the 30 finalist entries in the Settings category.
If you want to vote for other finalists in the other themes, go back and click on the Gallery tab and move on to the other themes.
Please let me know if you have any questions or need help. I wish they had made this easier as far as the voting goes, but this is the only way I know of at the moment.
I really appreciate your help and support......and your vote IF you like my finalist entry.
I am really excited too because out of the 10 winners in each theme, one will be selected at the end of the contest that the directors will base their next movie projects on....FAR OUT!!!
Congratulations. I know how strong the competition is in that contest. I watched the contest and resulting film from it last year. I did enter a few images in this contest this year. I hope your image wins for the theme of setting.
Thank you so much Marlene! I really appreciate your support!!!
I also want to thank the FAA member who posted notice about the Project Imagination contest to the forums here...which is how I found out about it. I cannot find the post now as it was quite some time ago, but a huge "THANK YOU" to the poster!!!
An FAA friend suggested I post my finalist photo so here it is:
Congratulations Rory! You know you have my support!!! I will vote everyday till you win!!! :D heading there now..... Good Luck! Carla :) I voted, but not sure if it took? It didn't do anything when I clicked on vote. You will find my comment there. I will try again tomorrow... :)
Hi Carla and Patricia!!
First, thank you so much for your well wishes and for trying to vote. There seems to be some confusion about the voting from what I am seeing in the comments on the contest website.
I think from what I saw today, that when you click on the center of the finalist photo where it says, "Expand to vote" that it does the trick, but just in case, I would also scroll down once the larger image opens and hit the vote tab anyway. I tested it last night and one of those two actions worked because when I tried it again it told me I had already voted!!!
Dear Rory...wishing you all the very best in the contest...thank you for sending a private email too..
The image that has been chosen is outstanding...and it put you in the finalists group which is just absolutely fantastic! I have voted yesterday...and must say I wasn't sure whether my vote was accepted..but then I tried to vote again...and I knew it has been...as you can't vote twice on the same day...so that is a good indication for someone who is not sue...
I hope you get to final 10 !!
best of luck Rory...go,go.go girl!!
I figured you would comment here and I am glad you did. I will only address this once here because this thread is about something really joyful that has happened for me...and I don't want to ruin it! If you want to respond, I ask that you be respectful of my good news, and respond either in another thread or by private message.
This is vote solicitation...and as I explain clearly in my post above, it is mandated by CANON and the contest guidelines...because it IS the second phase of the contest. I also explain that if it was up to me, it would not be the case. I did not create the contest parameters, but I do have to abide by them.
This contest is encouraging and mandating vote solicitation....just as the PUBLIC voting FAA contests do. However, this is not at all the kind of vote manipulation that I have taken issue with in the past. I have repeatedly said that I understand the reasoning and purpose for soliciting in FAA public voting contests. What I, like many other members, have taken issue with, is when member only voting contests are continually hijacked, not even just by those soliciting in a straightforward manner, but by cliques of associates that make sure members of their group always win...to the detriment (in my opinion) of other contest contributors that also have fabulous work that deserves to win.
I really appreciate your support and generosity in voting for my finalist entry....that is very kind!
Courtney! CONGRATULATIONS...that is awesome!!! I just saw your wonderful finalist entry in the Project Imagination contest RELATIONSHIP category and voted for it!!! I love your photo and will vote for it every day!!!! Maybe we both will be able to celebrate even more in October...guffaw! Wouldn't that be marvelous?
Rory there is a website called the art list : artlist.com, membership ranges from less than $10.00 to $40.00 a year for membership (there is also a free membership level), for which you can have access to a number of juried shows all over the world.....categories include photagraphy as well as painting, sculpture etc....any medium. It would be worth it to look into this site.
Please register and vote for this gorgeous image created by one of our fellow artists Rory Sagner - a finalist selected by judges in Canon contest " The Way Home ".
As you can see the image is outstandingly beautiful so please show your support!
In response to many requests for help from entrants and visitors having trouble with voting, here is an update on voting in the Project Imagination Contest from Canon. My steps in the first post of this thread seem to be working however!
We know there has been some confusion regarding the public voting process in Canon’s “Project Imaginat10n” Contest and hope to resolve any questions.
Additionally, a few finalists have requested talking points for any media inquiries. To assist you, please find talking points attached that provide background information regarding the finalist announcement, campaign, last year’s project and what to expect this time around.
How To Vote:
1. Guests first need to register on the website: imagination.usa.canon.com
2. Once in the Photo Gallery, click “Finalists” to view all of the Finalists at once. Alternatively, you can “Browse By Theme” and then select “Finalists” to view the 30 Finalists in that theme.
3. Each Finalist photo, on rollover, says “Expand to Vote.” If you click the photo, it will expand and show an option in the bottom right hand corner to “Vote.”
4. Once you have voted, the voting icon will turn bright white.
5. If you are trying to send friends a link to your photo, each photo has a unique URL. That means that if you're looking at your photo individually, the URL that shows up on the site is unique to your photo. If you want to share a link to send friends directly to your photo, you can use that link. This URL will take you to the individual photo view and you can vote as described in #2.
6. People can also share their photos directly from the “My Dashboard” section of the site.
· If for some reason the finalist photos do not appear in the website gallery, please refresh the cache in your browser.
· Each person can only vote once each day per theme with their registered email address.
· If for some reason you have missed any email from us regarding Canon’s Project Imaginat10n, please check your Spam folder and then add us to your contact book.
· For all media inquiries about Canon’s Project Imaginat10n campaign, please reach out directly to Courtney Engel at firstname.lastname@example.org and she will coordinate press releases, photos and interviews.
Chrissann...click on the link above in my first post here. Then go through the steps I have written out in that first post. That way you will find it. They did not exactly make it easy for people to find images, but those steps do work...there's just too many of them for my liking..guffaw!!!
I have been at work all day and just saw your question. If you want to start your own thread asking for support, just like this one...here is what you do!
Put your cursor over the "Community" tab up at the top of the page. A drop down will show up with many choices. Click on "Discussions."
Then, look to your right and down just a little bit for "Post New Discussion."
Click that and it will open a window for you to title your discussion thread and make your first post. Keep in mind that you want your title to be clear in the first few words as the words in longer titles won't show up until members actually click on the thread title.
You can mark the boxes under your first post to "follow" the thread and/or be notified when someone posts.
PS I voted for your entry again today!!!
Oh...and to make your photo show up in your post: Go to that image's page in your gallery and copy the code for it which you will find to the right of the words "image link." then paste that code into your first post!!!
I just want to thank all of you that posted today and that are being so incredibly supportive! It appears that there are now three of us (FAA members) that are finalists...how cool is that???
I think it speaks volumes for the caliber of artists that are on this site...that 3 out of 180 (6 categories times 30 finalists in each), finalists are from FAA...so far!
Thank you so much to Chrisann...who so graciously sent out a notice to her group members, also to Donna P., Nelieta, Anne, Terri, Geri, and Sharon, Gun, Jim, and Donna R. who is ALSO a finalist in the PI TIME theme category!!!
And a very special thank you to Jolanta who has got to be one of the kindest and most considerate human beings I have ever known.
Last, with all the voting glitches, the Project Imagination staff sent out instructions yesterday which said to simply provide the link to our image in the gallery. You still have to register and sign in to vote, but hopefully after you do so, this will make it easier!
I had good intentions of voting for you Rory, and on the last step of the registration ..... it states that you must be a US citizen.
So, all the very best in the competition Rory, I am there in spirit! With the support of your FAA 'family' you should do well. Good Luck!
I would like to thank everyone for their wonderful support. No matter how this turns out, I am very touched by your willingness to take the time to visit the PI site and vote. Don't forget, both Courtney and Donna, also FAA members, are also finalists and you can find links to vote for them if you wish in their discussion threads here on FAA! Courtney's entry is in the Relationship theme category and Donna's is in the Time category. You can vote once a day for one image in each of the theme categories!
Special thanks today to Anne, Kerri, Rachael, Danielle and Donna....you are greatly appreciated!!!!
Well done Rory...It took a while but I did manage to vote, I had to register first through my facebook, but got there in the end...please keep us all posted on how it goes...well done again....it really is a beautifull image.
Too bad that I cannot participate in the voting of this contest since I am not a US Citizen, however I wish you all the best. I really hope that you win this contest, your image is just Gorgeous!! Best of Luck!!!!
Congrats and good luck! Will continue to vote for you. And thanks for letting us know about this development. Being relatively new to FAA, this is a very encouraging story to me and a good reason to spend a little more time around here, so I wont miss it next time someone posts about competitions. Again, congratulations!
Thank you so much Katie....I really appreciate your efforts! Don't know why they made it so complicated to vote...or maybe I should say complicated to figure it out, since once I DID figure it out it has not been hard at all. There have been other issues with the website too...it's gorgeous, but not especially user friendly.
Just a reminder that you can vote every day, for one entry in each theme! Only 6 themes are currently open for voting including mine (Settings Theme.)
If you want a timeline for the whole contest you can click on "How It Works" on the homepage of the contest. That gives all the dates for submissions, voting, results, etc!
I won't know any results until mid October as PI is only listing the votes we ourselves make on the site...not the votes we get from others. I am actually happy about that because it helps me not to be a nervous wreck about it all...guffaw!!!
You do not have to be USA Citizen to take part i VOTING...only if you want to take part in the contest...so please vote...as you are entitled to it...
I am not a USA Citizen and registered and vote for Rory's image daily...
I just found out the numbers....that my entry "The Way Home" was one of 30 finalists chosen out of close to 9000 entries in the SETTING theme category!!! I am flabbergasted and so honored by this! I feel it's also an honor in recognizing our beautiful PNW and it's natural beauty!
My question was about posting a picture within a thread. I started a thread, I just didn't get any responses, so I didn't bother with the picture. Thanks though, and I remember to vote for you everyday.
I posted this further up in the thread, but there's a lot of posts since then so here it is:
to make your photo show up in your Discussion post: Go to that image's page in your gallery and copy the CODE for it which you will find to the right of the words "image link." then paste that code into your first post!!!
I have mentioned your entry here and in emails to some other members. I also have voted for it every day....it's gorgeous and I love how it so beautifully reflects your theme of TIME!
Oh people have responded since then. I've seen your comment on the photo, and I also saw support from other FAA members. I think I'm just too new here. So I'm not bothered by it. I've learned SO much from the process. Win or lose, I have to say I have grown eons in just 4 days. It's been worth it.
@ Courtney: I completely agree with you...it's a HUGE learning experience!
Are you aware of just how many total entries your photo was selected out of as a finalist? It's in the thousands!!!! So, it is a fabulous honor for us to have even had that happen....and that was determined by the judges....not public voting! I have never had to self promote before and find it not only time consuming (especially if you are having to work full time), but a bit of a challenge to my sensibilities about such things. But since we made it this far, I think we owe it to ourselves to go the final step! I am too busy to really think about it much and like you, I feel that the outcome will be great...regardless.
And the other thing to consider, which some friends here have pointed out to me, that this is inspiring for all of us and would be great PR for FAA as well....especially if you, Donna and I all made it to the final 10 in our categories! I am really fairly new here too, but am finding many members that are being amazingly gracious and supportive!!!!
Rory... so you are on of 30 finalists chosen out of close to 9000 entries ??? !!!!
That is just fabulous and great achievement indeed!!
Voted again...oc! and you do not have to be a USA Citizen to vote...I have friends from Europe who keep voting for Rory's image...
Lets support out fellow Artist here!
Thank you so much Jolanta for that important information!!!! I let a few people know that thought they could not participate...so I am very grateful to you!!!
Amelia, John and Shawn....a huge thank you to you all for your support!!!! I really appreciate it and am very touched by so many FAA members coming forward to help!
PS I stayed up most of the night getting two entries ready for the Discovery theme category...the only one that is still open! They are now posted if you want to take a look...and don't forget, all of you in the US can enter that category as well!!!
Only 7 more days of voting left for my theme category (Setting) and the 5 others that are currently being voted!!! So please keep voting once a day if you can!
ALSO the voting started TODAY for the next 3 categories....GOAL, OBSTACLE, and THE UNKNOWN. There are some fabulous entries in those categories so you might want to take a look! And submissions are still open for DISCOVERY for those of you interested! There won't be finalists for that category, but there will be one winner..chosen by Ron Howard himself! That will be interesting.
My heartfelt thanks to all of you for helping me in this endeavor...and don't forget that both Donna and Courtney are finalists that would appreciate your daily vote as well!!! Hope we all can celebrate in October with good news!!!!
PS Jolanta....are you available as an agent??? (Guffaw)
I see you have gotten a lot of support. i'm very happy for you.
i worked like a million hours this week and have neglected getting the word out. but you never know. its still fun though...but this is a good learning experience. and i like this site. do you have oother photos on it yet. i still need to understand all this a bit more. for instance copyright / ownership.. not sure how it all works.
my girlfriend is a terrific photograhper and she sent me this link - more contests... i actually havent checked it out yet. i will this weekend.
did you have problems with people not being able to register?. most of my friends (yeah like 4 out of 7) told me their email address was rejected as not being valid. disappointing. they tried different computers and different email addresses, etc.... but no good
I was sort of in the same boat working and other challenges this week. Hoping that those 3 images going to be picked by judges will give us a chance! I have no idea how many votes we all have...and am actually glad we cannot see that!
Yes, many people responded here and have been so kind! One challenge though is that I found many people still did not realize that they can vote once a day for one image in each category.
It's a gorgeous website, but not very user friendly and they've been having problems with not all the finalist images loading by theme....yegads! It also would have been helpful if they had a page of "Voting instructions," as many people have had trouble figuring it out. I had not heard of anyone having trouble registering...that is strange. You should have them email the help email address for the contest immediately!! Maybe they could just register them. I have voted for your photo every day except one I missed.
You do not relinquish copyright, but the release we had to sign had a few things in it I found pretty scary. It's nearly impossible without either being an attorney or having one, to understand all the legalese in the agreement. I spoke with a nice gal there who reassured me...and I understand about companies trying to protect themselves, but it was required to confirm our finalist status...so what are you going to do? It might have been informative to see what happened with last year's winners.
Thanks for the link...I will check it out this weekend! Only 3 more days of voting now...for us...whew!!!! Another FAA member emailed me about other great contests too, but I think you have to pay a certain amount to join the site that gives out the info. I have to dig through old emails, but when I find it I can send it to you!
Ok, time to zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz!!!
Thanks for checking in and don't give up! Your photo is gorgeous and so perfect for the category!
PS Did you put any photos in Discovery? I have 3 in there!
Just wondering what makes you think they are done notifying? I ask because they say the winners won't be announced until mid October...and it's only the 4th today. I am not giving up on your gorgeous finalist entry!!!! And really, if you consider that your photo was one of 30 chosen by the judges out of THOUSANDS as a finalist, even just that is a huge honor!
When they notified us about being finalists we could not say anything until they made the public announcement, so yes, I am sure you are right about that being the same for the winner notifications.
Let's just see what we find out between now and October 15th!!!!
I do think that it make take them awhile because there were about 13,000 entries in the Discovery theme category...amazing!.
I am bursting with pure joy and happiness for our girl Rory Sagner...who is one of the winners in Cannon contest!!
This is such a wonderful news that I can hardy contain myself..hahah
Congratulations Rory! I am so proud of you!!
What a fabulous news!!
Lets open up champagne bottle now! haha
love and hugs xxxxxxxxxxxxxx
