It's All About The Light

I once read a comment from a well-known photographer that stated....

...I would much rather look at artwork of laundry hanging on the line in great light, than have to look at artwork of the Taj Mahal in bad light.

And I could not agree more!

Ran across (what I feel) is exactly what he was referring to.

Light is fundamental to all art, but takes on special significance in Photography

Great topic, Jeffrey! Photographers chase light for a reason, and it's something that is of the utmost importance to me. A few samples of my favorites, both photographs and paintings:

as i read elsewhere, if you don't have light you don't have a picture. light is what gives things dimension.

Beautiful images, and I agree, but without the darker tones there would be no light - not in the "wow" sense.

One of the amazing things about photography is noticing and then placing light in ways that really make the subject standout. This is often a challenge when using artificial light and natural light in the same image. Yet, when it is done well the results are fantastic.

I was pretty much staring into the sun here and the light filtering down through the leaves had a great effect.

I recently drove 120 miles to relatives in the country and it was overcast and I thought I had wasted the time but got 400 photos anyway, the lack of bright sunlight though has it's own remarkable quality and a different effect. When I was teaching myself painting once I read that colors are more saturated on a cloudy day, in bright sun there is so much reflection that most surfaces are a shade of grey, either shadows or bright highlights.

If we didn't strive to capture light in our images then I suppose they'd be awfully dark.

It's all about the quality, colour, and direction of the light that we should consider when producing artwork. Taking advantage of what all three attributes have to offer will impact the viewers reaction in a positive manner.

Beautiful, beautiful images here, It's nice to see light as an actor on the stage, rather than simply part of the set if you know what I mean. If I might throw my latest tuppenceworth into the ring...

Well...

Without light we would all be blind and I think art would suffer if we were all blind.

Light reflecting off an object is what enables us to see.

But to think how our eyes take in that light and sends it to our brain to be turned into an image that we understand is truly an amazing aspect of nature.

Kevin Callahan

I would add that it is the light vs the dark. Caravaggio understood chiaroscuro like no other artist before him and darn few after.
