Ralph Stein was born in 1928 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He attended the University of Wisconsin at Madison, studied acting at the Goodman Theatre in Chicago, and acted in stock companies in Milwaukee. Stein moved to New York City to further his acting career in 1948. He furthered his journey to becoming an abstract expressionist when he became a member of the Art Students League in Greenwich Village and took sculpture classes from Nathanial Cass.
