Alternation - A Design Principle

Alternation is similar to Gradation in that it can be applied to all seven Design Elements, Alternation is more abrupt. Instead of gradual change, the change is immediate.

Color: - Warm to Cool, Rich to Neutral, Any two colors, Different values of the same color, Different intensities of the same color.

Line: - Straight to Curved.

Value: - Dark to Light, Mid to Dark, Light to Mid.

Texture: - Rough to Smooth.

Shape: - Angular to Round.

Size: - Large to Small.

Direction: - Oblique to Perpendicular.
