"King of Beer 1858" . . . Vintage image of Gambrinus, known as the King of Beer. Before his time beer was brewed with a blend of herbs (called gruit) instead of hops. Gambrinus is credited with introducing or legalizing the use of hops for brewing in Holland during the 1300's. He created an order of merit called the Ordo Lupuli (Order of the Hops).
