The Forest and the Trees

It seems like everything I do is small. I love small. Small is big. But, small is also aching shoulders and squinty-eye headaches. So, I was really excited to get the chance to make something big. As in bigger than me big. Touch the ceiling big.

My friends,Christy and Patrick, were planning a Dol party for her daughter's first birthday. They needed a backdrop for all the photos of family and friends in attendance. They wanted something with a woodland theme. Something playful and quirky. I designed this little backdrop scene, inspired by the simple plywood sets of so many grade school plays and pageants. I used sheets of 1/2" insulation foam from the Depot. They cut easily with a small saw (or a steak knife for the tricky bits), and took paint easily. It was a fun challenge getting them to stand (and fitting them into my car to transport!).

We hung a giant blue sheet behind, and Christy crafted some sweet little birds from felt to finish it off. Though baby Kaia was the true showstopper of the day, the little forest added a nice bit of color and whimsy to super fun afternoon!
