How Do We Fix This Contest?

Posted by: Baywest Imaging on 06/26/2013 - 11:07 AM

So many of the best and amazing photos don't make it to round 2.
Right now it's just who can solicit the most votes to get to the second round. Maybe the entire contest should just be judged?

Think so too

I agree.. the 250 target should be removed so the best photos can have a change....

Totally agree...I'm still trying, but am a little put off by the soliciting process (well, more than a little).

Here are some thoughts and mutterings about what I have finally surmised about the seemingly ambiguous nature of the TV contest, not necessarily in any order or in order at all!

The TV contest is all about publicity/networking and bringing new blood into the system- thus the reason we need 250 votes and get 100 to trade. ...
The contest instructions direct us to network on FB and other social networks as well as ((shudder)) friends, family, colleagues, clientele.

That said, I too think expecting us to get 150 outside votes above our dole of 100 is unrealistic.
I think if we each were expected to get only 50 outside votes it would entice a larger portion of the community to participate, potentially bringing in a wider base of new people. I know for a fact that many from last year will not re-enter this year, and many did not enter at all because of the massive vote requirement outside of FAA trade allotment. But maybe each year new people take up that slack??

The so called "best" work will never win for many reasons - one of which is the fact that the "voting" quickly turns to "trading" due to the nature of the setup coupled with the number of votes needed overall Very few entrants actually go through and vote for all of their favorites or what they consider to be the "best" image - it quickly turns to vote requests and vote trades- after all- it is set up that way and is encouraged- you cannot afford to vote for someone that may not return the vote, just because their work is worthy.

Bummer - I lost a great deal of my message above for some reason it was cut off when I posted it - and I am unable to add to it now...

My last word to finish the above statement was "how grim"

Another pet peeve is vote retraction- a few just keep fishing around with their same 100 votes! during the last days of the contest you can lose 25-50 votes

Oh, and after it is all said and done - I see nothing negative about last year's TV winners - and it was the same frenzy then too, networking and vote getting, retracting votes... It seems to somehow resolve itself in the end. It is just that some really great pieces of art are never seen because the member will not play the game. whatever, I guess.

due to the posting malfunction, you were saved from a much longer soapbox rant!

I know that it is all about bringing new blood into the system as you said CJ. I tried with friends and family on fb, but many back off when FAA wants to access contacts/email, etc. I refuse to beg them and now that I have done this, know that I don't have the time that it requires. My votes have gone up and down so many times, it's obvious that people are "re-using" their votes.
BTW...enjoyed your rant (which it really wasn't). It appears that we often shoot the same locations. Perhaps we'll bump into one another on the trail someday!

I agree with CJ, very few entrants actually take the time and go through and vote for all of their favorites.
Everyone should take a look. Some amazing work!

Yes, we need to fix the vote retraction. I am solidly helping several photographers today and have noticed as I am promoting their votes are going up and down. Frustrating! It's so close to the end- everyone needs to stand by their votes!

I don't mind playing this game to get to round 2 as I have not only gotten increased traffic to my portfolio, but also a couple sales during this time. It's been great! :)

CJ, I can appreciate your perspective. I didn't do enough research in the beginning since I voted on a bunch of images. Even though I added a list of who I voted for and posted it in the discussion feed, all the people did not return my vote. So then I emailed individuals and they voted. :)
Then I stumbled upon some info about the trading sites on fb less than a week ago so I am trying to up the votes there. I am getting some votes.

I also hear from people that they don't like the idea of having to use their fb name and password to log in to vote fearing there will be access to their information being misused.

I don't know if people are retracting votes from me but that is so wrong and should be stopped. Maybe next year someone will be able to figure out a way for people to vote one time / not have to log in and their one vote will be irrevocable.

Hey I'm dreaming about getting to the juried round, so I can dream about next year's possibilities, right? lol

If you have extra votes and like my image please vote!

I completely agree. I have asked so many people for votes and the most I have is 51. Personally I don't think I will do it again if I have to get 250 votes again.

By the way Cheryl I am your vote #108. :)

If you like mine I would appreciate a vote too.

Agreed!! With so many pictures to judge how does anyone reach 250 votes without being on the internet 24/7 soliciting them? It's virtually impossible! And I still have no clue what the whole facebook thing is. Don't get how that works for getting votes! Oh well. Better luck in the future I guess. But I for one won't be entering another one where I have to solicit that kind of votes.
