Description
BLOODY POINT LIGHTHOUSE
Chesapeake Bay
Offshore Kent Island, MD
Built in October 1882, the “Coffee Pot” (so called because of its shape) still stands a lonely vigil off the southern tip of Kent Island in Maryland. This lighthouse is a caisson structure 30 feet in diameter and thirty feet high. The iron tower is another 37 feet high.
In 1884 severe gales swept sand from the footing of the caisson and as a result, the whole structure leans about five feet from perpendicular at the focal plane. Numerous attempts to right the lighthouse failed, including the washing of sand from the opposite side of the tilt and packing with rip rap. Nothing work as the sands filled in and the rock sunk into oblivion.
An electrical fire in 1960 chased coastguardsmen from their attempts to quench the flames, barely escaping the fire in their power boat.
