Description
Brain haemorrhage. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan of the brain (side view) of a 63 year old man. The light patch at the level of the brainstem (lower centre) shows that there is a subacute brainstem haemorrhage, which is an early-stage, slow-progressing bleed. This is likely a result of this patient's chronic hypertension (high blood pressure). Surgery to stop the bleeding is urgent in these cases. If untreated, severe brain damage and death can occur.
