Description
CRAIGHILL CHANNEL
REAR LIGHT, UPPER RANGE
Chesapeake Bay, MD
There are two sets of range lights on the Craighill Channel, and upper and lower range. The channel itself lies south of the Patapsco River entrance and connects with the Brewerton Channel which in turn eventually leads to Baltimore’s Inner Harbor. Each set of range lights contain a front and rear light. William Craighill was a long time member of the Lighthouse Board and supervised the engineering surveys of the channel that bears his name.
This is a four sided, open frame pyramid with a square central shaft. Built on land in 1886, this is the upper light for the “Cutoff” Channel into Baltimore’s Inner Harbor. The light is 74 feet above high tide and can be seen for 18 miles.
