Very beautiful. They place is a treasure. Excellent work. I will definitely shop here again.
Shelf fungi, also called plate or bracket fungus, grow on dead and dying trees. Some are huge, like this one, while some are tiny. They can be beautifully banded with bright colors.
This is a large, tough, handsome specimen of a shelf fungus called Dryad's Saddle or Pheasant's Back, that is growing on a dead tree. Many have concentric circles of color denoting each year's growth. A kindly visitor gave me updated information and a correct ID. Here is the website:

I always wanted to try photography, and my retirement offered an opportunity to do just that. The natural world is my first love. Here you will find pictures of things both large (landscapes, for instance) and small (macro) that catch my eye. I hope the images serve as a window into the natural world many of you don't have the chance to see. In a sense, I'm trying to create a guided nature trail, sharing what information I have about the subject. I'm always grateful for new and better information and welcome all input. Learning is food for the mind and soul. Nothing is ever harmed in the picture-taking process, but some things that wander into our home (like spiders) are carefully removed from the house after they serve as "models"....

Oh, my. What a great find. I've yet to stumble upon anything this big or beautiful!!! F/L++
Carol Senske replied:
When you come across one, I sure hope you don't "stumble! I adore these fungi - so much diversity and such a size. I have at least one more photo to post that shows a couple fully opened. The fruiting bodies appear every year on this log. Thanks for the wonderful comment !
