Description
As a child I walked the length of the famous Victorian West Pier in Brighton many times often with my parents. Later as it was disintegrating, and already separated from the mainland to stop folks climbing on it, I made this capture with slide film. A few years later it burned down completely leaving only a steel skeleton. This then is a rare late afternoon fine art image of the pier as it was before it was destroyed and reduced to a black framework. I scanned the slide a few years ago and this week while moving a folder of old scans rediscovered it. It is here presented with new skies and textures thanks to some tweaking in Photoshop.

Oh Chris ... this beauty actually just gave me goosebumps. Thanks to so many of our talented artistic friends, when i first glimpsed your artwork, I thought I remembered the story of the demise of this graceful old lady. Reading your description, it all came back to me. Though I never saw it in life, I feel as if I have now done so. How fortunate that you captured it when you did ... that you rediscovered it ... and that you are YOU and able to bring back its most glorious glory-days in such a magnificent and artistic and creative way!!!!! Wow and wow and wow!!!! l/f tweeted and stumbled!!!
Chris Lord replied:
One of the few good things about being an old fogie is the huge collection of old images one has amassed over the years. I have photographed this pier just about every year that I have returned to Brighton so have images of it in every state it has existed in except perhaps it's original vibrant open to the public to walk on state. Those images are only locked in my head. Not being a painter they will have to stay there but I have the rest to resurrect and play with. I do wish I had been around to photograph the great fire that finally engulfed it. I have seen some great pictures from folks who were there and I bet they sell well. Well, I am very pleased that you enjoyed this one Lois and are familiar with the pier's history. Thank you so very much for the wonderful wonderful comment. Cheers

Chris Lord replied:
Finding this again makes me want to go through all my old slides, thousands of them to see if I have more gems in there. But time, oh where does one find all the time?? Here I am retired but still can't find time! Happy you liked it, it is meaningful memory for me. Thanks very much Meg, cheers
