Artist's Description

The dashing Douglas Fairbanks (1883-1939) was the silver screen's first swashbuckler, years before Errol Flynn (1909-1959). Extremely athletic (despite a weak heart), he performed all his own stunts, with a few rare exceptions. www.youtube.com/watch?v=2NEmIKdvpPQ Always the optimist, his last words were "I never felt better in my life." A 1940 remake, directed by Rouben Mamoulian (1897-1987) and starring Tyrone Power (1914-1958), was released. Power lacked the athleticism of Fairbanks, but made up for it in good looks and charm. High point of the film was a duel to the death between Power and arch villain Basil Rathbone (1892-1967). Rathbone was a world class fencer in real life and would have easily bested Power. Ironically Power died 18 years later, collapsing in a duel scene with George Sanders, in King Vidor's final feature, "Solomon & Sheba" (1959).

While at the U of A, I studied with the master black and white photo essayist W. Eugene Smith (1918-1978) the last year of his life. I am the last person cited in Jim Hughes' definitive biography of Gene, as I wrote about attending his final...
