Very pleased with the image, color, printing . My selection of printing onto wood is great for this image. There are a few mildly dark lines which are natural to wood. They show through the image and contribute to the image--glad that none of these was over the face of the horse rider.

Perfect! I wish that you'd included a translation of the two inscriptions in some ancient language that are above the shoulders of St John Coltrane. It would cost your company virtually nothing to supply this with the picture.

Artist's Description

The dashing Douglas Fairbanks (1883-1939) was the silver screen's first swashbuckler, years before Errol Flynn (1909-1959). Extremely athletic (despite a weak heart), he performed all his own stunts, with a few rare exceptions.

Always the optimist, his last words were "I never felt better in my life."

A 1940 remake, directed by Rouben Mamoulian (1897-1987) and starring Tyrone Power (1914-1958), was released. Power lacked the athleticism of Fairbanks, but made up for it in good looks and charm.

High point of the film was a duel to the death between Power and arch villain Basil Rathbone (1892-1967). Rathbone was a world class fencer in real life and would have easily bested Power.

Ironically Power died 18 years later, collapsing in a duel scene with George Sanders, in King Vidor's final feature, "Solomon & Sheba" (1959).

About David Lee Guss

David Lee Guss

I first became obsessed with photography and motion pictures while growing up in post WW2 Manila in the Philippine Islands in the late 1940's/early 1950's. Film noirs were a particular influence. But my first love remains the theater. I acted in numerous amateur productions from 1958 to 1978. In 1979 I earned a MA in drama from the University of Arizona; earlier getting a BA in English from the University of Minnesota, where I co-founded the first film society on campus and ran it for four years. While at the U of A, I studied with the master black and white photo essayist W. Eugene Smith (1918-1978) the last year of his life. I am the last person cited in Jim Hughes' definitive biography of Gene, as I wrote about attending his final...
