Artist's Description

This film is usually picked as one of the top ten film noirs. It cemented Robert Mitchum's deserved reputation as "The King of Film Noir." The RKO film was thankfully released before Howard Hughes bought the studio. He later had a vendetta against Jane Greer (1924-2001), who had the audacity to put her family above her RKO contract. While at the U of A, I studied with the master black and white photo essayist W. Eugene Smith (1918-1978) the last year of his life. I am the last person cited in Jim Hughes' definitive biography of Gene, as I wrote about attending his final...
