Molecular computer graphics showing the crystal structure of one of the new generation of high- temperature superconductors, yttrium-barium-copper oxide (Y-Ba2-Cu3-O7-x). Discovered in 1987, the new superconducting ceramic materials are expected to lead to a technological revolution and are the subject of intensive worldwide research. The two Swiss researchers who discovered these new superconducting materials were awarded the 1987 Nobel Prize for physics. Copper atoms occur at the centre of layers of copper oxide square pyramids (green) and planes (blue). Oxygen atoms are in red, yttrium atoms in light blue and barium atoms in yellow.
