Description
Household Cavalry Life Guards pass along Pall Mall during the Trooping the Colour parades in London, England. Trooping the Colour is a ceremony performed by regiments of the British and Commonwealth armies and has been a tradition since at least the 17th century. On battlefields a regiment's Colour (or flag) was used as a rallying point and an ensign would slowly march with their Colour through the soldiers' ranks to enable them to recognise their Colour. Since 1748 Trooping the Colour has also marked the official birthday of the British king or queen. It takes place on a Saturday in June and is a major London tourist attraction with parades by the various regiments of the Queen's (King's when the monarch is male) Guard and Household Division.
