Description
You can identify this pretty woodpecker by it's distinctive coloration - especially the white rump which is visible as it flies away. This picture was taken in a mixed hardwood forest in Green Lane, Pa, on November 9, 2010. They seem to favor picking ants of the bark of trees, or searching for food on the forest floor.
This picture was taken January 7, 2011, in Green Lane, Pennsylvania, USA. These birds are common and fun to watch:>).
