Artist's Description
Plasma membrane. Illustration of the structure of the plasma membrane that encloses cells. The exterior of the cell is at top, and the interior at bottom. The membrane is a bilayer of phospholipids (blue). Embedded in the membrane are proteins (green). These can be transmembrane proteins (left) or peripheral surface proteins. Chemicals found in the membrane include cholesterol (pink rods). Attached to the outer surface proteins are molecular chains (pink) such as carbohydrates (centre left and upper right) and glycolipids (far right).
