Description
Carolina Reaper chilli pepper (Capsicum chinense) being pollinated by hand. This hybrid cultivar chilli pepper was listed in 2012 by the Guinness World Records as the hottest chilli pepper in the world. It was bred by crossing the red naga pepper and red savina pepper. On the Scoville scale (a measurement of spicy heat) Carolina Reaper was rated at an average of 1,569,300 Scoville Heat Units (SHU) with a peak rating of 2,200,000 SHU. Indoor grown chilli plants require manual pollination for fruit to grow. Chilli peppers contain capsaicin and capsaicinoid molecules which cause a burning sensation on the tongue when eaten by mammals.
