Description
Rubella virus particles, coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM). The virus particles (round, yellow) are budding from the host cell surface. Enveloped in the host cell's membrane, they are able to move through the host, infecting more cells. The interior virus capsid is icosahedral in shape. Rubella disease, commonly known as German measles, is the cause of congenital rubella syndrome when infection occurs during the first weeks of pregnancy. Rubella is a respiratory viral infection characterized by mild respiratory symptoms and low-grade fever, followed by a maculopapular rash lasting about three days.
