The Monte Cassino monastery & basilica were blown to bits during World War II. Which summarizes the results of a miss understood combatant communication. The statue we see today was also disassembled with an allied explosion. However, it was pieced back together as part of the post-World war effort to put the place to right. I really like this statue as it looks as though Saint Benedict is watching for someone coming up behind him from the corner of his left eye.
