Color enhanced transmission electron micrograph (TEM) Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica ser. typhimurium bacteria. The Genus Salmonella is divided into many groups, all of which can cause diarrheal diseases. Salmonella are gram-negative bacilli. They are found worldwide and involved in the spoilage of meat and eggs. If a large amount of pathogens are ingested, small bowel infections, gastroenteritis can be triggered. In rare cases (immuno-compromised or elderly patients) this can lead to circulatory failure leading to death. Treatment is with electrolyte balance. Magnification 12,5001 (at 15x12 cm image size).
