Doug Kreuger replied:

Thanks so much Hanne! The original painting hangs in our dinette, and serves as a reminder of our early ancestors who helped settle the SD prairie lands.

To think about what this old abandoned homestead has seen in it`s time, yet, there is a tilled field and the old barbed wire fence is reinforced with modern angle iron...it tells one that life goes on...great painting buddy....of course, more gold...L/V

Doug Kreuger replied:

Thanks so much Dave! Life does, indeed, move on…

Magnificent painting, Doug!!! Spectacular light and shadows in this wonderful composition! L/F

Doug Kreuger replied:

Thank you very much Hanne!

Lovely image, stirring old memories!.......L.

Doug Kreuger replied:

Thanks so much Shirley!

Doug---I have visited this scene before---however, I am appreciating even more details---and the lights and shadows---the quality of the light in the background is so familiar. Interesting description---I think we would have to lose our I-phones--and all the tech to have what they had then---possibly. LV

Doug Kreuger replied:

Thanks Nava… In talking with some of my older relatives, the "simpler times" were not so simple! I think I prefer my nat' gas furnace and air conditioning to that of a drafty, smokey, wood-burning fireplace in the winter and screen-less windows in the summer. LOL… How 'bout you?

What an awesome work of art Doug.....very masterfully done....I love the addition of the pheasants....gold medal work.....L/V

Doug Kreuger replied:

Thanks so much Dave! Hope you are well, happy new year my friend!

Like the way you worked this piece; a pleasing well balanced work with great thought in the lighting which is a pleasure to view;) v/f

Doug Kreuger replied:

Thanks so much for your very thoughtful comment Jack!

Brilliant use of light. f/v

Doug Kreuger replied:

Thank you Wanda!

Doug---a wonderful capture of the memory--and the light! It will live on. My second visit--a fave--and took another vote. :)

Doug Kreuger replied:

Many thanks for your kind expressions, they are all greatly appreciated!

This is another beauty, Doug. A wonderful but sad scene as it means another era has passed! L/F

Doug Kreuger replied:

Thank you Marilyn for your heartfelt comment and support-much appreciated!

My sister in law absolutley loves it. She sent a picture of it ot us. When we join her in Hawaii we will be looking for one for our own walls...I love the colors! If our walls weren't already filled here I'd already have one for myself as well...

Artist's Description

This quiet, tranquil scene represents what remains of an early homestead that once belonged to my great-great grandfather Tom Crompton and his first wife, Lydia (McKinney), in the early 1900's, in Wetonka, SD. Keep in mind, this setting wasn't always as peaceful as it appears in this painting. Tom and Lydia had a difficult time providing for their family on the open prairie. Summers could be sweltering hot, dry and windy, making it nearly impossible to grow enough crops to survive some years. And winters were long, bitterly cold, and especially hard to endure. Eventually, Tom and Lydia divorced. Tom remarried Carrie Mattatal and added at least 7 more children to his name. The farm failed during the "dirty-thirties", and most of the family moved to Portland, Oregon. Today, I think about how resourceful the people of that era had to be, calling on their faith, hope and love for one another to help see them through the tough times.
