Description
Stonefish mating congregation. Group of stonefish (Synanceia verrucosa) in a mating congregation, the males jostling for position and swimming over the females. The female stonefish releases its eggs onto the seabed, and the male stonefish fertilizes the eggs by releasing sperm over them. These individuals, having just shed their cuticles, are vivid pinks, purples and reds, resembling a coralline algae encrusted rock. This is one of the world's most venomous fish. The sting from its spines can be lethal to humans. Photographed in the Red Sea off the coast of Egypt.
