Thornapple seed. Light micrograph of a section through a seed from a thornapple (Datura stramonium) plant. The seed contains two coalescent carpels and two rows of seeds. When ripe, the capsule splits into four. From outside to the centre: testa (surface) of the seed; pericarp (yellow); endosperm (brown-yellows), which stores nutrients of starch and proteins; embryo; two cotyledons, in between the plumule, and the radical and in between the hypocotyl. Magnification: x5, when printed 10 centimetres wide.
