Description
"Self-Portrait with a Recent Invention" by William Constable, British, 1783 - 1861. This daguerreotype is from c. 1854. William Constable, photographer, surveyor, inventor and civil engineer, here poses with his most recent invention: an improved regulating device to increase the efficiency of steam power. Constable ran one of the first daguerreotype portrait studios in England, which he opened in Brighton in 1841. One of his patrons was Prince Albert, who sat for him.
