This is a painting reproduction of a detail from “The Olympic Games”by Jean Pierre Saint-Ours of about 1789. The artist was about thirty-seven years old when he created this painting. Born in Geneva, he began his studies in Paris when he was seventeen years old. He won the Prix de Rome, but was denied entry into the Academy due to his lack of French citizenship. He went to Rome with own finances and was able to build a modestly successful career. He initially supported the french Revolution. He exhibited in the Paris Salon of 1791 and returned to Geneva the next year where he entered into Revolutionary politics. In 1796 he became disillusioned by developments in France and retired from politics, devoting himself mostly to portraiture. He died in Geneva in 1809. The full painting is an oil on canvas and measures 209.5 by 386 centimeter. It is in the Musee d’Art de d’Histoire in Geneva.
