Description
Yellow dung fly (Scatophaga stercoraria) foot, coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). The two claws (pale brown) are used to grip rough surfaces. The hairy adhesive pads, or pulvilli (pink, beneath claws), secrete a solution that allows the fly to cling to smooth surfaces. Magnification x130 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
