Artist's Description
A Confederate artillery piece in the horseshoe salient near what came to be known as the "Bloody Angle" at the American Civil War battle of Spotsylvania Courthouse in Virginia.
This battle ran from May 8 through 21, 1864 and the most vicious fighting took place here as the Federal troops attacked across the field in front of this gun emplacement into withering fire from the Confederates entrenched here.
General Robert E. Lee had placed his army on a ridge in a horseshoe shape, (this was called the muleshoe salient); this gave him a defensible position, but had a negative aspect, in that it allowed the Federal troops under General Ulysses S. Grant to attack from three sides and catch the Confederates in a horrific crossfire.
On may 12, Grant ordered an assault on the western side of the ridge, centered a few yards from the position in this image. For the next 20 hours this was the scene of hand-to-hand combat, some of the ugliest, most vicious fighting of the war. A split-ra...
