This modern road is along the route that Confederate troops took on the second day of the American Civil War battle of Gettysburg, on their way to attack the Federally held position on the high ground of Little Round Top mountain. in a flanking movement.

That engagement involved some of the most horrific fighting, characterized by some of the greatest heroism...on BOTH sides...of the three day confrontation, that is one of the most important events in American History.

On the day in October when I visited the battlefield, the beauty and tranquility of Autumn in Pennsylvania, could not have been further from the horrors this area was host to in the first three days of July, 1863
