Description
Osteoarthritis of the hip. Frontal X-ray of the right hip of a 57-year-old woman with osteoarthritis affecting the joint. The spacing between the femoral head (centre) and the hip socket (acetabulum) has almost worn away completely. The patient is in a supine (lying down) position. The femoral head has deformed and is now welded to the hip socket. Osteoarthritis is a joint disease aggravated by mechanical stress. Symptoms include joint pain, stiffness and swelling. In severe cases, the hip joint will need to be surgically replaced.
