There are two monuments to the 124th New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment on the Getysburg battlefield. The main monument is south of Gettysburg at the Devil’s Den on Sickles Avenue, The 124th New York Infantry was commanded at the Battle of Gettysburg by Colonel Augustus Van Horne Ellis, whose statue tops the monument. In the thick of the fighting around the Devil’s Den, Colonel Ellis ordered the staff’s horses brought up and he, Major James Cromwell and Adjutant Henry Ramsdell mounted. When a captain protested that they were making targets of themselves Major Cromwell replied, “the men must see us today.” Both he and Colonel Ellis were killed, but the 124th held long enough to buy an hour’s time for the south flank of the Army of the Potomac.
William Rogers is a Disabled Veteran who started his career in Photography as a Combat Cameraman in the United States Army. He did camera work for the United States Army and retired to work for Lifetouch Children's Photography for over 20 years. William became a historical photographer and recorded special projects for different historical organizations like the SAR. He is now based in his new home the Philippines and we be presenting the life and Heritage the people
