Description
Woodburytype photograph by Lock & Whitfield from Men of Mark" 1877. John Tyndall (2nd August 1820 - 4 December 1893) was a well known Irish-born physicist who worked on diamagnetism, thermal radiation and atmospheric processes. He was also a mountain climber, spending much time in the alps - he climbed the Matterhorn within three years of the first ascent. He wrote on Glaciers and glacial flow - work that set him in conflict with accepted expert James David Forbes. Later in life he became an advocate for the separation of science and religion, and was associated with Darwin in the eyes of the public. He advocated Darwinism but there is no clear evidence that he was an atheist. He thought that knowledge and rationality belonged with science and faith and spiritualism with religion. He was ardent in his opposition of Irish Home Rule, which he saw as a coup for priests and Catholcism."
