Description
Birds of Prey.
The Ferruginous Hawk is a bird of prey. Their feet are small in comparison to the rest of their body and they will sit on the ground above burrows waiting for burrowing mammals such as prairie dogs or rodents. They will even punch their feet into the dirt to grab their prey. Oddly they will nest of the ground themselves.
Raptor is derived from the Latin word rapere meaning to seize or take by force. Birds of prey, known as raptors, refer to species of birds that hunt and feed on small animals and rodents. They are meat-eaters, or carnivorous, and are abundant in a desert community, forests or underpopulated areas. Eagles, falcons and owls are some in this category.
The Ferruginous Hawk is the largest hawk found in North America.
