Explosives detection using bees. Security officers at an airport testing two types of surveillance, a dog (left) and bees (blue box, right). Honey bees (Apis mellifera) are sensitive to the smell of flower nectar and pollen, but here have been trained to detect the smells from chemical explosives. When the bees detect explosives, their reaction is observed on a computer monitor. This work is being carried out by the UK research company Insense.
