Description
Hofmann's chemical models. Artwork showing how early chemical models were used to demonstrate the formation of molecules, in this case methane (marsh-gas, CH4). This demonstration was performed by the German chemist August Wilhelm von Hofmann (1818-1892) when he gave a lecture to the Royal Institution in London, England, on 7 April 1865. The title was 'On the Combining Power of Atoms', and these artworks were later published in the journal 'Proceedings of the Royal Institution' (volume 4, 1866, pp.401-430).
