Light micrograph of a fetal ovary showing several oocytes (immature egg cells) undergoing meiosis (gamete formation). At bottom several oocytes are in the zygotene stage of prophase. The paired chromosomes appear forming dark aggregates known as bouquets. At top two oocytes are in the leptotene stage. In this stage individual chromosomes form visible thin strands within the nucleus. These strands show small granules called chromomeres.
