Polarised light micrograph of a Micrasterias sp. desmid, a freshwater unicellular green alga. It is characteristically symmetrical in structure. Each cell is composed of two mirror-image halves joined by a narrow isthmus. They grow in long, filamentous colonies. Magnification: x400 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
